Ein sogenannter Stand-up-Comedian ist die amerikanische Version dessen, was hier in Österreich gemeinhin als Kabarettist bezeichnet wird. Soll heißen: Da wie dort steht jemand einsam und verlassen auf der Bühne, erzählt von sich und seinem Leben und versucht so das Publikum zum Lachen zu bringen. Schön, wenns gelingt und schön blöd, wenn nicht. Diesmal demonstrieren Tom Hanks (damals, als er die Oscars noch nicht in der Tasche hatte) und Sally Field, dass Blödeln manchmal eine ganz schön ernste Sache sein kann.
