Christopher Nolan („The Dark Night“) verfilmt die Schlacht um Dünkirchen, wo über 400.000 Briten und Franzosen im Zweiten Weltkrieg von den Deutschen eingekesselt wurden. Erzählt wird aus vier Perspektiven: Der blutjunge Soldat Tommy (Fionn Whitehead), Pilot Farrier (Tom Hardy), der pflichtbewusste Captain Mr. Dawson (Mark Rylance) und Commander Bolton (Kenneth Branagh) sind die Helden des Films. Die Schlacht zu Erde, Wasser und in der Luft ist ein klassischer Nolan: Episch, bildgewaltig und ziemlich laut.
