John Merrick (John Hurt), dessen Schädel durch eine unheilbare Krankheit dermaßen deformiert ist, dass er an einen Elefantenkopf erinnert, ist die Attraktion einer Monstrositätenschau im Viktorianischen England. Ein junger Arzt (Anthony Hopkins) nimmt sich seiner an und entdeckt hinter dem abstoßenden Äußeren einen sensiblen, intelligenten Menschen. In Zusammenarbeit mit einem großartigen Schauspielerensemble (John Gielgud, Anne Bancroft) gelang David Lynch ("Mulholland Drive") ein äußerst bemerkenswerter und eindrucksvoller Film.
