Die Bewohner des Planeten Krypton erfahren, dass ihre Welt in die Sonne stürzen wird. Um wenigstens einen Vertreter der hoch entwickelten Zivilisation zu retten, schickt der Herrscher Jor-El (Marlon Brando) seinen Sohn auf die Reise zu einem fernen, blauen Planeten namens Erde. Als Superman (Christopher Reeve), ausgestattet mit übermenschlichen Kräften, tritt der kryptonische Gesandte später zur Rettung der Welt an. Ein Film für Kinder jeden Alters, der alles unter Vertrag nahm, was gut und teuer war und einen Namen hatte: Regisseur Richard Donner ("Zwei stahlharte Profis"), Drehbuchautor Mario Puzo ("Der Pate"), Kameramann Geoffrey Unsworth ("2001") bzw. Filmkomponist John Williams ("Krieg der Sterne").
