Denn seine verwitwete Mutter hatte in der Zwischenzeit den grausamen Mr. Murdstone geheiratet, der ihn schlug. Er wurde zur Arbeit nach London in die Fabrik seines Stiefvaters geschickt und kehrte erst zurück, als er von dem Tod seiner Mutter erfuhr. Um seine Verwandten zu finden, reiste David nach Dover.
